Over the last few years, tattoos have became a large part of modern culture, particularly in the UK. However, for many people, finding the right tattoo artist can prove very difficult; you don't want to go to someone who's going to give you a bad piece of work, or someone who's going to charge you a ridiculous amount of money. Because of this, we've decided to give you a breakdown of 10 tattoo artists who you may not have heard of, but need to take notice of (and you'll get to see some amazing artwork too).
LAURA A.E. TAYLOR London, UK Laura is a tattoo artist currently working at Shall Adore in Shoreditch, who focuses her art on natural subjects, and works in both colour, and black and grey. With a portfolio consisting of florals, feathers, mirrors, birds, figures, and skulls, this is not an artist you'll want to miss.
MARTIN JAHN
Berlin, GER MJ, working at NOIA, a private studio in Berlin, is a tattoo artist who works solely in black and grey. His high contrast designs, made up of bold and fine lines, and dot-work shading, make for some truly stunning pieces once on the skin. Martin is definitely one of the most unique artists around.
MARTHA SMITH
London, UK Martha is an artist who focuses her work on largely natural subjects, tattooing her woodcut style drawings onto the skin. Using line-work and dot-work in her pieces, her visual studies make for some amazing tattoos; you can find her at Xotica tattoos in North Finchley.
RENATO LEANDRO DE SOUZA
London, UK Working at Black Garden Tattoo, and Hammer Hands Tattoo Parlour, Renato is one of the best artists in London for geometric designs and fine line-work. His black and grey patterns, and almost illusion-like designs are extremely interesting, and his intricate shading can create some great 3-D pieces.
ALEKSY MARCINOW
London, UK Aleksy is another extremely unique artist, as his bold designs are largely reminiscent of comic book illustrations. His use of large chunks of colour/shading, and extremely innovative concepts, make for pieces that you won't find anywhere else. He is currently working at Black Onyx studio.
TINE DE FIORE
Chicago, US Dark; ornamental; intricate. If Tine's work could be summarised in three words, it would be these. Having worked on mandalas, patterns, geometrics, landscapes and natural subjects, Tine is one of the most experienced black workers around. Her impressive shading and repeated lines make for beautiful pieces of art. She can be found at Speakeasy Custom Tattoo.
DILETTA LEMBO
London, UK Working at the well established Family Business in Exmouth Market, Diletta works in a neo-traditional style but puts her own twist on it. Small details in her work, such as lines on faces or symmetrical compositions really bring her work to life. Her colour portraits are especially immaculate.
MALWINA MARIA WISINIEWSKA
London, UK Working at Scratchline Tattoo in Kentish Town, Malwina is another amazing geometric artist. Her creations using polygonal shapes stretched across the body are really eye-catching; and her skills with fine line-work and dot work also mean that she has the ability to work with other subjects too.
MOWGLI
London, UK If abstract compositions are what you're looking for, Mowgli is the artist for you. He can work with almost any subject, and can merge together portraits, natural subjects, geometric and text, in a way that it will translate perfectly onto the skin. The way in which he works with both colour, and black and grey in the same pieces makes his work stand out. Find him at OhhMyGod Tattoo Studio.
FREDERICO RABELO
Travelling The final artist on our list is Frederico Rabelo, who spends a lot of his time doing guest spots around the world. He uses black and grey dot-work and crosshatching, to create what are astonishingly realistic pieces with this method of shading. His compositions are truly remarkable on the skin, and something to really appreciate.
