BY CHARLIE WATSONInto the Spectrum is our new arts feature, in which we plan to bring you interviews and work from some of the most talented artists from around the globe. Over the next few weeks we plan to showcase artists from a range of disciplines, starting with Johnny Fonseca. As a London-based photographer with Portuguese roots, his work in portraiture and fashion reflects both the starkness of urban life with the vibrancy of human individuality. Current trends contrast with cultural memories and simple slice-of-life shots that touch on the commercial applications of his pursuits. Take a look at our interview, and some of his amazing work, below. Q. How did you start out as a Photographer? At what point did you decide that you wanted Photography to be your career? A. When I started taking photography seriously and actually wanting to be a photographer was roughly the time of A-levels; it was the moment I was told “you had to pick what you wanted to do”, which I still feel is ridiculous, to make people pick what they want to do when there's still so much to explore. I was lucky enough to get my hands on my first DSLR at 15 and from there just had fun, experimenting. Only when I got to the University stage is where I thought about everything, and began taking everything seriously. Going to University and studying at Arts University Bournemouth was one of the best decisions ever for me – I could go into that whole section but I’ll allow it aha.
Q. What has been your favourite project that you've worked on?
A. There have been so many. I feel that working for TheSlumflower (www.theslumflower.com) has been one of the most genuine projects/collaborations I have done; there is so much more than just taking photos. I feel like our work together has ended up giving me a true friend.
Q. Where do you feel you take influence from the most?
A. Personally, I gain influences from pretty much everything, which could be from TV to movies to even graphic designers. I take inspiration from everything and there is no right or wrong. Sometimes, even just being out with friends, I will think of a cool mini-series I can begin at that exact time. Inspiration is literally everywhere, sometimes you just have to see things differently. Q. What camera and lenses do you shoot with and why? A. I shoot with Canon personally, because I started with a Canon and love the way the whole camera works, I still don’t really understand the Nikon VS Canon rivalry. I currently shoot with a 5D Mark III and predominantly shoot with prime lenses, something about physically moving allows me to get up close and really capture the essence. Q. If you could do a photo shoot with anyone you wanted, who would it be? A. There are so many people. I mean, if you’re asking this in terms of celebrity status, I would love to shoot someone whom I am a fan of and would love to meet and really get to know: Chloe Grace Moretz, Tori Kelly, Kendall Jenner and lastly Jaden and Willow Smith. Q. What, in your opinion, is the hardest subject to capture? A. Everything has its difficulties, it’s simply how you overcome them.
